Cooper is a lovely dog and a great companion. However, he is an anxious, excitable fellow who can be difficult to manage. Dawn trained both Cooper and myself. Dawn had been a volunteer at our shelter for a year. In this time, my team and I have had the opportunity to learn directly from her how to interact with the dogs in our care as well as our own. Dawn has also conducted a specially designed course for the team at the shelter on how to train the types of dogs we encounter. Her method uses positive reinforcement which we feel is a more effective and humane way to train dogs. Dawn has made such a positive impact at the shelter. She teaches us how to train stray dogs to behave in a manner that assists us in rehabilitating them and ultimately adopting them out to good homes. The dogs that come into the shelter cannot tell us where they came from or what has happened to them. We have to make 'guesses' based on their behaviours. Oftentimes we are faced with new behaviours that we haven't dealt with before. Dawn has helped us so much in this regard. She continuously researches and learns all she can to help us effectively care for the dogs. I strongly believe that we have had many dogs enter our shelter that without Dawn's assistance and guidance, we may not have been able to rehabilitate and adopt out.
